Our Unique Kilimanjaro Program
Day 1 | Arrival in Tanzania
Suggested departure with KLM from Stockholm, Linköping, Gothenburg, or Copenhagen via Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro International Airport. You book your own flights, but of course we’re happy to assist if needed. Upon arrival, our trusted local safari guides will be there to welcome you. We head to Arusha for an overnight stay at a charming safari lodge. A light welcome dinner is served, and we’ll walk through the upcoming program together.
Day 2 | Safari in Tarangire National Park
After an early breakfast, we set out for Tarangire National Park—a hidden gem that has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to its rich wildlife and stunning landscapes. We’ll spend the full day on safari with a picnic lunch along the way. In the evening, we settle in at Tortilis Tented Lodge for a shared dinner and a cozy night in the bush.
Day 3 | Ngorongoro Crater Safari (2,286 m)
Another early start as we drive through lush rainforest toward the legendary Ngorongoro Crater—one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world. Over 30,000 animals live here year-round, and the experience will stay with you for life. Tonight, we check in at Tortilis Ngorongoro Tented Lodge, where a campfire and dinner await. Around the fire, we begin talking about Kilimanjaro, get to know each other, and start building the team spirit for the climb ahead.
Day 4 | Mt. Makarot Trek & Safari (3,130 m)
We rise at dawn as the morning mist still blankets the rainforest. Guided by local Maasai, we trek quietly through the dense vegetation—wildlife encounters are possible! The goal is to reach Mt. Makarot’s summit at over 3,000 meters, giving our bodies a head start on acclimatization. After a few hours of hiking and a scenic summit, we return for an early lunch before heading back to Arusha and on to the village of Machame at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Aishi Protea Hotel or similar. In the evening, we gather by the fire for an in-depth briefing about the upcoming 7-day Kilimanjaro trek. All questions are answered. Now, we prepare—together—for the adventure of a lifetime.
Day 5 | Machame Gate to Machame Camp (2,000 – 3,000 m)
After breakfast, we take a short drive to Machame Gate. Here we register with the park authorities and meet our porters and mountain crew. Our journey to Uhuru Peak begins. Today’s hike is approximately 4–5 hours at a slow, steady pace, with lunch en route. By early afternoon we pass the tree line and arrive at our first camp—Machame Hut—where dinner and a well-deserved rest await.
Day 6 | Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,000 – 3,840 m)
As the sun rises over the horizon, you hear a cheerful "Good morning" outside your tent. Fresh coffee or tea is delivered straight to you—a wonderful way to start the day. After a hearty breakfast, we begin a steady and fairly steep ascent toward the Shira Plateau.
This is one of the most important days for proper acclimatization. The climb is challenging but we take it slowly—Pole Pole is our mantra. We stay hydrated, share songs, and enjoy the camaraderie. Lunch is served en route. As we climb, the landscape transforms—from forest and shrubs to alpine desert.
Today’s trek takes around 5 hours. When we arrive at Shira Camp, we’re rewarded with panoramic views across the plains and even Mount Meru in the distance. Tonight, the air feels different—thinner and cooler. Some may experience a mild headache or nausea as altitude starts to make itself known. It’s all part of the journey. There’s a sense of quiet, anticipation, and awe in the camp tonight.
Day 7 | Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,840 m via 4,600 m)
Another early wake-up with the familiar sound of "Good morning, coffee, tea." After breakfast, we begin the longest trekking day of the week. The route starts gently before gradually climbing toward Lava Tower at 4,600 meters. We take our time, eat lunch on the trail, and absorb the high-altitude landscape of sand, rock, and surreal silence. After reaching Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters—a golden opportunity to acclimatize by climbing high and sleeping low. The final stretch takes around two more hours. In total, we hike for 6–7 hours today, and many feel the effects of the altitude more strongly.
But we take it slow and steady—together. Arriving at Barranco Camp is a triumph. A well-deserved dinner is served, and we rest beneath the towering cliffs of the Barranco Wall, which awaits us tomorrow.
Day 8 | Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,950 – 4,000 m)
Lying in your sleeping bag with the morning sun warming the tent—there’s no rush today, but soon it’s time to rise. After breakfast, we face the dramatic Barranco Wall—also affectionately called the “Breakfast Climb.” This is a fun and rewarding scramble with unforgettable views.
From here, we traverse into the Karanga Valley, on one of the shortest but most scenic hikes of the expedition. The day’s walk is only a few kilometers, but at altitude, and with breaks to enjoy the alpine landscape, it takes around 3–4 hours.
We reach Karanga Camp early in the afternoon. The glaciers of Kilimanjaro feel within reach now. This day is all about resting, reflecting, and preparing. There’s time for card games, coffee breaks, and soaking in the high-mountain atmosphere at 4,000 meters. We are in the alpine zone now—pure, raw, beautiful.
Day 9 | Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,000 – 4,600 m)
Today, we climb with our sights firmly set on the summit. The trek to Barafu Camp takes only a few hours, but every step now is about preparing for what’s ahead. Barafu is perched on a narrow rocky ridge with dramatic views over the valleys below.
We arrive by lunchtime, allowing time to rest, check gear, and mentally prepare for summit night. An early dinner is served, and then we rest. This is it. The summit push begins tonight.
Day 9–10 | Summit: Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp (4,600 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m)
At 22:00 we wake, dress in layers, and fuel up with hot blueberry soup. Then we begin—slow, steady steps into the cold darkness. The trail climbs relentlessly to Stella Point, the crater rim, where we aim to arrive by sunrise.
We pause every hour to hydrate and catch our breath. At dawn, Stella Point greets us with orange skies and hope. But we’re not done yet—about 45–60 minutes remain to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
We make it. Emotions overflow. We hug, take photos, cry, laugh, sip water, and celebrate. You did it.
But this is only halfway. The descent begins. We return to Barafu for rest and lunch, then continue further down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 m—a taxing 3-hour descent where trekking poles are essential. This day is long, intense, and demanding, and we focus on supporting one another all the way. The risk of injury is highest on the way down, so we stay alert, together. Dinner and sleep are richly deserved tonight.
Day 11 | Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (3,100 – 1,500 m)
After a well-earned sleep-in and breakfast, we begin our final descent through lush rainforest. The trail eventually leads to Mweka Gate, where the lowlands—and cold drinks—await.
Oh. My. God. That first sip of beer at the bottom tastes like victory. Here, we say heartfelt goodbyes to our amazing guides and porters. Then it’s a short transfer to our lodge, where a swimming pool, soft beds, and great food await.
We celebrate with lunch, dinner, and one final overnight at the comfortable Sal Salinero Hotel alternative Planer Lodge closer to Arusha.
Safety and Preparation
These are two of the most important aspects of any Kilimanjaro expedition. Reaching the summit is, above all, a matter of mindset. The key is to stay committed—not to give up.
Before and during the trip, your expedition leaders Fredrik and Malin will provide ongoing coaching, sharing knowledge about how the body responds to high-altitude trekking. Our program is designed to maximize your chance of reaching the summit safely and successfully.
We bring medical kits, work with skilled local guides, and have access to helicopter evacuation services in case of emergency. The Search® Adventures also follows a detailed safety protocol, based on:
The Swedish Product Safety Act
